Directions: The decade before the Civil War saw many events that led to tension between North and South. Some
were positive for Northern states and some for the South. For the first portion of the activity, go through each of the events listed and find their dates and one to two key facts for each. Write your key facts on the google doc attached.  Then, using a blank sheet of paper or a page of your Social studies notebook, place the events below onto an illustrated
timeline.
                   
What Your Timeline Must Have:
1. First find out when the event took place and write the date. 
2. Decide whether it was positive for the North or the South. If it was good for the North, write the event on the top half the timeline. If it was a positive for Southerners,  write the name of the event below the line.

Now that you have analyzed sectionalism, your assignment is to create a Meme!

Memes are associated with images and catchphrases which spread throughout the internet and social media. They’re either usually meant to poke fun at or make a statement about a general truth that is related to the image. 


Be sure to do the following to earn full credit:
1. Select 6 of the images from the Sectionalism Document Exploration that you feel is the most ripe for a meme or that you feel best shows what life was like in the 1800s. You may delete any of the photos that accompany your selected memes and make the photos larger or smaller depending on how you want your meme to look. 
2. Select the text and type in your own meme text.
3. Be sure to write only school appropriate text
4. Out of your 6 memes, choose your best one to present to the class!
5. Put a bright yellow star on the meme you choose to present and then press submit on Google Classroom.
6. DO NOT press submit without the yellow star! I need to know which you wish to present to the class ahead of time.

Important note: your meme must make a statement about life in America during the 1800s. You might find a joke or meme that you can relate to your life or the world today. However, in order to receive credit, your meme must speak to life the American's experienced during this era.
